What is the Difference Between Blue, Black Mussels And Green Mussels?

Mussels can be categorized under 3 main groups of Blue, Black and Green which can be broken down even further into specific types.

Blue Mussels are essentially Chilean Blue Mussels, native to the southern hemisphere and are the smallest in size. Green Mussels can either be Green Lipped Mussels or Asian Green Mussels boasting the largest of the group. Bay Mussels and Mediterranean Mussels are both referred to as Black Mussels, native to the Northern Hemisphere and size wise falls right in between the two.

All types boast high protein, zinc, selenium, copper, iodine, vitamins B2 & B12, iron, calcium, and marine omega 3 fatty acids, DHA & EPA.

High iron content helps prevent against the most common form of anemia combating fatigue and weakness, omega 3s regulates heart beat keeping blood pressure low, and protein heavy foods (which the vast majority of our treats offer) aids in muscle building, bone strength, immunity, recovery and healing.

Green lipped mussels in particular are specifically fed for joint support, inflammation and pain management while Blue mussels are fed mainly for manganese.

The blue mussels are a significantly smaller variety of mussels compared to its green lipped cousin and will cost less. If your budget is too tight for the green but you appreciate the more plump mussels over the smaller blue, split the difference and go for the black mussels!

Regardless of what color and species you choose, all are power packed full of nutrients and may sometimes be referred to as a superfood!
